  • Crews said the fire was contained as of 5:30 p.m.
  • No evacuations were ordered, police said

“I watched tree after tree after tree, just the flames taking up all those bushes," said resident Kevin Knight.

The brush fire off State Road 524 started just after 2:30 p.m.

Crews say the real struggle was the wind. It carried embers from the fire down the road, and gutters from several homes caught fire.

“By the time I got down there, there was a lot of debris going across the road and I could see it got in some homes' gutters," said resident Carl Woods. "About 2 or 3 homes caught on fire."

Crews put those fires out quickly and without severe damage, but they remained on scene, setting up lines at different locations to keep the fire away from homes.

“From the time I saw it up until the fire department got here, those flames were rolling fast. It was definitely a pretty scary thing," Knight said.

During the incident fire crews did not have to evacuate homes.

Crews from Cocoa, Rockledge, Brevard County and the Florida Forest Service worked the fire.
