  • Suspect is Michael J. McCabe, a.k.a. 'Uncle Mikey'
  • McCabe thought to be in Port Orange area

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood has vowed to catch Michael McCabe, 47, also known as "Uncle Mikey."

Chitwood says McCabe would befriend family members and offer to babysit their daughters, in return for a place to stay at the family home in Holly Hill.

In January, the first victims identified in the case — two Ormond Beach girls, now ages 15 and 16 — told detectives McCabe moved in as their babysitter several years ago and molested them repeatedly over the years.

They said the abuse occurred when the girls were between 7 and 11 years old.

That case led investigators to another child, now aged 9, who told detectives her babysitter, who she identified as "Uncle Mikey," molested her starting when she was 5 years old and living with her family in Holly Hill.

Chitwood says McCabe would bathe with the girls and perform sexual acts on them, and even ask them to touch him.

“It makes you want to throw up to see what a predator and a scumbag this guy is,” said Chitwood.

Chitwood says the reason it may have taken so long for victims to come forward is because McCabe warned the girls not to tell anyone what he was doing to them.

On Friday, a 10-year-old child came forward to the Port Orange Police Department with a similar story. The department's Child Exploitation Unit is currently investigating her case.

Deputies went to McCabe’s last known address in Port Orange, but were unable to locate him. However, the sheriff is confident they will find him and bring him to justice.

Right now, the U.S. Marshals Office are helping in that search.

“And then we need to make sure that son of a b-- never sees the light of day when that jail cell slams shut on him,” said Chitwood.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-TIPS.
