A 5-year-old boy was taken to a Sanford hospital after he was bitten on a finger by a large pygmy rattlesnake, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The bite happened March 26 in DeBary.

FWC officers responded to Central Florida Regional Hospital in reference to a boy being bitten by the venomous snake on his right index finger. The child was transported to the hospital via emergency medical personnel.

An adult at the scene killed the snake and brought it to the hospital so it can be identified. The snake was a large pygmy rattlesnake, measuring about 18 inches, according to FWC.
