Amtrak Train 97 struck a "trespasser" at about 6:30 p.m. in Intercession City, an unincorporated community located about five miles west of Kissimmee.

Originally Amtrak thought two people were hit, but now says only the woman was struck.

The incident happened near Old Tampa Highway and South Orange Blossom Trail. There are no railroad crossing arms or warning lights in the area where it happened.

Investigators say they do not know why the woman was on the tracks. The woman was taken to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Polk County.

"It’s certainly not our usual... where we would think individuals would be in the train tracks," said Division Chief Ivan Mustafa with Osceola County Fire and Rescue. But being that the train tracks are open for long distances, there is a good possibility that they could have walked the tracks."

At the time of the incident, 88 passengers were on the train. There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members, said Kimberly Woods, a spokeswoman with Amtrak.

"Service has been temporarily suspended as local authorities investigate the incident," Woods said in a statement.

Train 97 is the silver meteor and it travels daily between New York City and Miami.
