The 58-year-old Stuart man, who was not identified, was about 30 to 40 yards out in the water at Beachway before 10 a.m. when he was attacked, said Senior Capt. Tamra Marris of Volusia Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

"… he was bit on the foot, a fairly minor injury. A typical case of mistaken identity. He did not see the shark. He was able to get out of the water on his own," Marris stated in the news release.

The man was treated at the scene.

In February, a half-eaten shark washed ashore at New Smyrna Beach Inlet.
