The NAACP will be holding a news conference Saturday morning in support of Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala's decision not to seek the death penalty while in office.

  • NAACP to hold news conference today on death penalty
  • NAACP in support of State Attorney Ayala's death penalty stance
  • Attorney Aramis Ayala against death penalties in her cases
  • News conference to start at 10:30 a.m.

The group plans to hold the news conference at the Rosen Centre Hotel on International Drive in Orlando.

At the news conference, members are expected to talk about why they are against the death penalty and why they believe Governor Rick Scott is overstepping his authority when he removed State Attorney Ayala from the high profile Markeith Loyd cases.

A little over a week ago, State Attorney Ayala announced she would not seek the death penalty against accused cop killer Markeith Loyd.

At the same time, she also said she would not seek the death penalty in any of her cases unless significant changes were made to the process.

It was a surprise to some voters and to Governor Scott.

The Governor announced he was removing Ayala from the Loyd cases and reassigning them to State Attorney Brad King.

State Attorney Ayala is still relatively new to the position.

She beat incumbent Jeff Ashton last November.

“It is clear that it is Ms. Ayala’s attention to make this office the center of a partisan battle over the death penalty and this is a misuse of the office,” said Jeff Ashton, Former State Attorney.

The NAACP news conference is expected to start around 10:30 a.m.
