A former Orlando Police officer struck by a vehicle in 2015 while responding to a call is pleased the trial against the man accused of running him over is going forward.

Former Officer William Anderson was in court at the Orange County Courthouse on Wednesday, concerned that the State Attorney’s Office was going to seek a plea deal for Edward Kelty, accused of running him down in July 2015.

Anderson was against any deal that would have put Kelty away for a maximum of 15 years. In the end, prosecutors decided not to strike the deal.

Anderson, who still uses a cane to walk and has a service dog named Polo, can no longer work for the Orlando Police Department.

“(Kelty) deserves to do more time than that. I’m suffering life-long injuries. He needs to be in there for more than 15 years. It has already been a year and a half, almost two years, and here I am still suffering every day,” Anderson said.

The nearly two-year-old dashboard video was shown in court Wednesday. It shows Anderson stopping a vehicle and rushing toward it with his gun drawn. Anderson was responding to reports of shots fired.

As Anderson reaches the driver's window, a passenger is seen jumping out the other door. Anderson appears to run in front of the car. That is when the driver accelerates, hitting Anderson, officials say. The former officer said he fired twice at the driver.

Anderson told News 13 he would consider a change of heart about the plea deal if Kelty apologized to him.

“I can forgive him if he accepts what he did was wrong, even just being there,” he said.

Anderson says there is still a chance the State Attorney’s Office could agree to a plea deal.
