A Brevard County humanitarian continues to spread hope in countries that need it the most.

Joe Hurston, of Titusville-based Air Mobile Ministries, is headed to flood-ravaged Peru on Thursday.

"It's just dumping rain on an area that is already inundates," Hurston said.

Just hours after returning from Haiti, he is set to fly to Peru — a country suffering from the worst torrential rain and flooding in decades.

More than 70 people have been killed, according to the Associated Press.

"That's what moved us to go, because we know the situation is only going to get worse," Hurston said.

The Brevard County man is taking a dozen portable water purifiers with him on the 2,700-mile, 15-hour journey to South America.

Each purifier can deliver clean water to more than 1,000 people per day. About 12,000 flood victims can be helped in a 24-hour period.

"I could do 40, 80, 120 people an hour and give them clean drinking water right there on the spot," he said.

Hurston is ready to take flight once again to a place where life hangs in the balance. He hopes to save lives — one sip of water at a time.
