SeaWorld's special penguin named Wonder Twin is getting a lot of attention because of a spiffy outfit she wore.

That little outfit could help other penguins with feather loss, a condition that puts them in great danger.

Just last fall, the 26-year-old penguin wasn't molting naturally.

"Now if they don't go through their molt, they go through something that we go through - they go through baldness," said SeaWorld aviculturist TJ Dray. "Salt water naturally breaks their feathers out."

With exposed skin, Wonder Twin couldn't keep warm, especially in the water. That's not a good thing, especially since penguins spend nearly three-quarters of their lives in the water hunting. Ideally, they need nearly 70-feathers in just a quarter-sized space on their bodies to achieve a perfect body temp.

So Dray and his team came up with the idea to create a custom-made wetsuit.

Wardrobe craftsperson Maria Barreto hand-stitched the first-of-its-kind suit.

Along with the wetsuit, SeaWorld tried feeding her fattier, higher protein fish and gave her supplements, including hormones. When penguins molt, they gain 25 percent of their bodyweight in one week.

Take Dray, for example. He says he weighs 160 pounds.

"This time next week - if I was a penguin - I'd have to be up to 200 pounds," he explained.

Looking plump and almost uncomfortable, penguins who are molting stay on shore and grow a whole new set of feathers - basically forcing the old ones out.

You can imagine who was doing a happy dance when little Wonder Twin started packing it on.

"She started gaining too much weight and you can see, we couldn't zip her up in the back, so we had to put spacers in (her wetsuit)," Dray said.

Then, in just a matter of a few months, Wonder Twin grew those new feathers. Now, she's sporting her own "natural" wetsuit.

SeaWorld has only used this wetsuit on Wonder Twin. But of the nearly 300 penguins in the Antarctica attraction, a handful of them experience feather loss as well.

"But we have a plan now," Dray said, confidently. "And now seeing her, I hope you get how excited we are. It is so cool to see how beautiful she is again."
