  • High school, nearby Millennium Middle were on lockdown
  • Police say it's an isolated incident

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sanford Police said the person who was shot is a student, but it's unclear if they are a student of the high school.

Sanford Police said the shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident and was not an active-shooter situation. It happened at Ridgewood Lane and Ridgewood Avenue, about .2 miles from the high school.

At about 5:15 p.m., police said they took a 16-year-old student into custody in connection with the shooting. The teenager is a student within the school district. (News 13 initially identified the 16 year old in the interest of the public's safety, but has since removed his name from the story, per the station's crime guidelines.)

A lockdown was in place at Seminole High and Millennium Middle schools after the student was shot just outside the high school.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of a shooting just outside of our Seminole High campus this afternoon," Seminole Schools Superintendent Walt Griffin said in a statement. "Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim's family during this difficult time. No other injuries have been reported, and students on campus are safe. ...We ask that parents please be patient as law enforcement and emergency personnel continue to work the scene.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but know that the safety and well-being of our students is our utmost concern," Griffin said.

Students have since been allowed to leave campus. Parents and guardians can pick up their students at the gym near Live Oak Boulevard. District officials warned that bus service would be delayed.

An email blast from the school will also be sent.

Also on Wednesday, a child was hospitalized after a group of students at an Orange County middle school got into a fight that involved pepper spray.

And at Timber Creek High in Orange County, the principal called parents after someone discovered a threat on campus. A student reportedly saw a message in a campus bathroom that threatened a possible incident for Thursday. The principal assured parents that the school is working with law enforcement to keep students and staff safe.
