Expect delays in one of the busiest traffic areas of Melbourne over the next several weeks as a major electrical project upgrade gets underway.

  • FPL beginning 2-month electrical upgrade in Melbourne
  • Bolstering power poles, lines
  • Traffic will be rerouted in some areas

Starting this week workers are bolstering power poles and lines to better hold up during hurricane season.

It's going to be a major adjustment for businesses in a very busy time of year. The Florida Power & Light project is beginning on the surrounding streets.

It's scheduled to last two months, with cars and pedestrians being re-routed.

With that, works zones will be constant near Eau Gallie Boulevard and U.S. 1 -- the busiest traffic area in the city, seeing some 55,000 cars daily.

Jody Carter runs Art Expressions Fine Custom Framing on Highland Avenue in the historic district.

With the work happening during the day, Carter is concerned. She wants her customers, new and old, to know she's open for business.

This is her busiest time of year, with snowbirds visiting and locals enjoying the mild weather.

"Our numbers are up until the middle of May, and then it slows down," said Carter. "If you need to get to me, call me first. I'll see what I need to do to get you in here."

The work is expected to wrap up in mid-May.
