Starting Wednesday, law enforcement will be watching some of the dangerous places for pedestrians in Orange County.

  • Undercover officers, deputies will walk across certain pedestrian crossings
  • Drivers who don't stop will get warning or ticket

Drivers who don't stop will either get a warning or a ticket. It's part of an operation called "Best Foot Forward," and Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Orlando Police Department are participating.

Year after year, the Orlando metro area is ranked as one of the most dangerous places for people crossing the street.

Wednesday morning undercover officers and deputies will walk across certain pedestrian crossings and drivers who don’t stop will either get a warning or a ticket for $164, along with three points added to their driving record.

Lena Serrano and her son used to use the pedestrian crossing at Pine Hills and El Trio roads, until they realized how dangerous it was when drivers wouldn't stop when they entered the crosswalk.

“It’s extremely hard to get across this section right here, extremely hard," said Serrano. “They will see, visually see people trying to cross, and they will not stop.”

The operation will happen at five intersections.

  • Pine Hills Road & El Trio Way
  • Woodbury Road & Mallory Circle
  • Dr. Phillips Boulevard & Sandberry Boulevard
  • Universal Boulevard & Rosen Hospitality College
  • Landstar Boulevard & Brooke Hollow Drive

"Most of them are within two miles of a school. There have been problems in the past at these crosswalks," said Barbara Giles.

Giles is with the Bike/Walk Central Florida organization and said Operation Best Foot Forward is more than just giving out tickets. The operation also works on road design and attend community events.

“We are trying to increase safety," said Giles.

Serrano said she feels no pity for the drivers who will get tickets.

"I was thinking that is exactly what they should do," said Serrano.
