A federal jury has found a former Brevard County football coach guilty on drug trafficking and firearm charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday.

Benjamin Jenkins, 36, of Mims, was found guilty of distributing and possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute it, possessing a firearm in furtherance of the drug-trafficking crime and using a telephone in committing the drug offense, a news release states.

Jenkins, who was a Titusville High School football coach and Brevard County teacher's aide at the time of his arrest, faces a minimum mandatory sentence of five years and a maximum of life in prison.

According to testimony and evidence presented at the trial, Jenkins sold 28 grams of cocaine to a confidential information for $1,300 on Oct. 11, 2015, in the parking lot of a Titusville Wal-Mart.

Jenkins sat in his car, counted the money for the cocaine and had a Springfield Arms .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol in his lap, a news release states.

The transaction was reportedly arranged over Jenkins' cellphone.

Jenkins was indicted Nov. 22, 2016. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 15.
