  • Members want to build community relationships, foster conversation
  • About 400-500 attended the mosque open house

Jessica Garcia, a member of the Islamic Society of Brevard County for more than seven years, wasn’t expecting to see such a large response.

“I was hopeful, I was hopeful there would be a good turn out and now look at this crowd,” she said.

Between 400 and 500 people visited the Melbourne mosque to learn more about Islamic faith and culture. Many hoped it would instill good conversation and relationships.

One issue many wanted to discuss: the recent travel ban that has affected some in the Islamic community, including those who came to the U.S. to study at universities.

“Unfortunately we have a few people from Libya and Iraq that came here for education purposes, that are having trouble getting back here to school,” said Raed Alshaibi, the community outreach coordinator.

The mosque has about 1,700 members. Officials hope the open house will continue to build strong relationships in the community.

“I’m just happy so many came out and supports the community in general and to learn and to expand their educations.” Garcia said.
