A man was arrested after a traffic stop that shut down Interstate 4 on Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies attempted to stop 40-year-old Christopher McHaffie near State Road 436 about 1:30 p.m.

McHaffie was driving a maroon Dodge Magnum, which had been reported stolen out of Orange County, deputies said.

When law enforcement arrived, they witnessed McHaffie driving erratically and entering into oncoming traffic at speeds of nearly 100 mph.

Deputies used stop sticks near westbound I-4 and Central Florida Parkway in Altamonte Springs.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, McHaffie refused to comply with deputies, they said. He then ingested a large quantity of pills, according to the news release.

Fearing he might overdose, deputies broke the windows of the vehicle to provide McHaffie with medical assistance. He continued to resist, so deputies used a stun gun to remove him from the vehicle.

Deputies administered Narcan, a nasal spray that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

McHaffie was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Once he is cleared by medical staff, McHaffie will be booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility on a $38,000 bond.

Westbound I-4 was closed for nearly two hours during the incident.
