Democratic U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist has filed for divorce from his wife, whom he married while he was Republican governor of Florida.

A spokesman said Crist filed the papers Friday seeking a divorce from his wife, Carole, who he proposed to in 2008. He was the first Florida governor in 42 years to get married while in office, the Associated Press reports.

Their elaborate wedding in St. Petersburg featured an elite guest list.

Carole Rome was a New York businesswoman when she and Crist met.

Crist was previously married to his college sweetheart, whom he divorced a year later.
