Orlando Police shot a man they say was randomly shooting people with what they think was a BB gun at the Wal-Mart store where an officer was slain last month.

  • Orlando Police: Man randomly shooting at people at Wal-Mart
  • Officer confronted man, who shot gun at him; officer returned fire
  • Suspect injured; gun turned out to be a BB gun

At about 4 p.m., a man was approaching and randomly shooting people with what appeared to be a handgun in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on West Princeton Street. At least two people were shot, Police Chief John Mina said during a news conference.

An officer confronted the man, who fired the gun at him. The officer returned fire. The man was injured and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The two people who were shot had minor injuries.

Orlando Police said the weapon was a BB gun, but at the time the man fired at the officer, he believed it was a real gun, Mina said. The barrel of the gun was larger than a regular BB gun. Mina said the BB gun did not have an orange tip and looked like a real gun.

"I've looked at the gun myself. It looked real," he said.

The Wal-Mart, located on West Princeton Street and John Young Parkway, is the same store where Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton was shot last month.

John Young Parkway was shut down between Silver Star Road and Princeton Street.

The officer has been relieved of duty while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates. The officer has been on the force for five years.
