Rollins College has suspended all six of its fraternities amid complaints that school leaders are calling "high-risk behaviors" from the fraternities.

  • Rollins College does not state what the behaviors are
  • College officials are meeting with each Greek chapter
  • Officials have not disclosed what the meetings are about

Meghan Harte Weyant, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, sent a letter Tuesday night to the Rollins College community.

"Yesterday, I reviewed a series of student conduct concerns as they are related to our fraternity community," Weyant said. "The concerns included high-risk behaviors on behalf of all six of our fraternities. This afternoon with the support of Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Chapters, I issued a temporary suspension on all Fraternity Life activities until further notice."

The fraternities are as follows:

  • Phi Delta Theta
  • Lambda Chi Alpha
  • Chi Psi
  • Sigma Alpha Epsilon
  • Tau Kappa Epsilon
  • Alpha Tau Omega

Rollins College said it suspended the organizations for the safety of all students.

According to the Winter Park Police Department, there's an open investigation related to a burglary with battery at the Plaza at Hannibal Square apartment building on New England Avenue. Residents there said it's a community where several Rollins College students live off campus.

Weyant stated that she and the Jazmine Rodriguez, director of fraternity and sorority life, have started meeting with each chapter. The press release does not state exactly what the meetings will entail or what the "high-risk behaviors" include.

Greek life is an important part of Rollings College, students said.

"It's very popular," Punit Udhwani, a student, said Wednesday. "They go in it for the parties and also they say they get benefits and stuff like that when they graduate."

The victim in the incident was taken to the hospital Sunday night, police said.

Lauren Bradley, director of public affairs for Rollins College, said that particular incident did not lead to the suspension.

"The fraternity suspension was the result of multiple conduct violations from several fraternities during the course of the semester, and not the result of any one incident," she said.

Udhwani, when asked about all six fraternities being suspended, said: "I guess it depends. If it's just one fraternity, it seems a little harsh. But if they're all doing it, it's fine."

The idea of a mass suspension is being called into question by at least two Rollins fraternities.

Heather Kirk, the chief communication officer for the North-American Interfraternity Conference — which includes Rollins College chapters of Chi Psi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon — released the following statement:

"The safety and well-being of students is our No. 1 priority," Kirk said. "We will always be supportive of accountability for not meeting shared expectations, but we oppose blanket actions that impact students who are following the rules. We look forward to collaborating with university officials to improve the fraternity community."

TJ Stevenson, president of Florida Beta Phi Delta Theta, released this statement:

"Yesterday the leaders of all six fraternities at Rollins College were informed by the Dean of Students, Meghan Harte Weyant, that our organizations would be placed on temporary suspension due to violations by all chapters of community standards & responsibilities. As president of Florida Beta Phi Delta Theta, I am working with college organizations and officials, as well as our General Headquarters, to take the appropriate steps toward reaching a point where the college is confident in our ability to better the Rollins College campus. Out of respect for all fraternities at Rollins, I will not be commenting on specific violations, but I have trust in the IFC board and our leaderships ability to bring fraternities back to Rollins in a safe and collective manner."

Greek Week activities have been canceled.
