Without a sidewalk in front of a large construction site along U.S. 17-92 in Maitland, Rick Hoffman, an avid bicyclist, says he's forced to illegally cross the busy roadway to continue his trip.

  • Man says he's forced to illegally cross US 17-92 to keep riding
  • FDOT says sidewalk will be reinstalled when development is done

"You have cars whizzing by you at 45 or 50 mph within feet," Hoffman says.

The construction site lies in between Greenwood Drive and Sybelia Parkway. No crosswalk is close, and that's the problem Hoffman says pedestrians face.

Hoffman says the reason he's so upset that the sidewalk ends is not just because it impacts those passing by, but also because it impacts anyone trying to catch a bus or Sunrail train.

"It endangers people, that's why it's so dangerous, because people have to cross this busy strip of roadway," Hoffman says.

The Florida Department of Transportation said sidewalks will be reinstalled when the development is complete. In the meantime, it says it will put up signs to indicate there is no sidewalk.

But Hoffman says while construction continues, those walking or riding are left in the lurch.

"Put the sidewalks back — please!" he said.
