NASCAR driver Dave Blaney's brother was the driver of the race car involved in a crash that injured three people on Sunday night at the Volusia Speedway Park.

  • 3 injured in Volusia speedway crash identified
  • 1 critical, 2 stable per Sheriff's Office report
  • Driver Dale Blaney's car severely damaged
  • FULL COVERAGE: Daytona 500

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. at the speedway in DeLeon Springs. Deputies stated the race car, driven by Dale Blaney, went through a 10-foot-tall containment fence. The three injured were in the pit area when the accident happened.

One person, identified as Michael Brooks, was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center, while two others were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Brooks, a 69-year-old Kalamazoo, Mich. resident, is currently at Halifax with family and friends, according to a news release by DIRTcar Nationals, which sponsored the race.

A Volusia County Sheriff's Office incident report had Brooks listed in critical condition.

A man from the United Kingdom has been discharged. Alan Wardel said his nephew, Gary Streek, was experiencing some discomfort, according to DIRTcar Nationals' news release, and the incident report listed him in stable condition.

Justin Allgaier Motorsports Crew Chief Kelly Kovski, 35, was listed in stable condition, according to officials and a statement by Justin on behalf of the family. They would like to thank first responders and medical staff for their rapid response.

DIRTcar Nationals said Justin will not compete in the remainder of the events this year.

Dale Blaney was not injured in the accident, and his car was damaged so badly that it was left inoperable, according to the incident report.

Fans said the race was just getting started when three cars got tangled up on the track, and one lost control.

“One car was rolling in, end over end. It leaped right over the fence of turn 2 and went into a crowd,” Mark Lockwood said. “People were scattering everywhere. It was crazy.”

Another spectator suggested some safety improvements for the speedway.

“I think there could be a little more safety on that back side over there, maybe some higher fence and cables over there,” Marty McLean said.

Sunday night’s race was qualifying for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Series.

The DIRTcar Nationals at the park will continue as scheduled with racing Monday night, though the pit area closest to the racing surface in turn 2 will be closed to all competitors, participants and officials for the remaining six nights of racing, according to DIRTcar officials.
