The man accused of trying to force a teenage girl into his car in Ponce Inlet has been formally charged with kidnapping and battery.

  • Jonathan Buchanan arrested in Daytona Beach Shores
  • Bond set at $75,000
  • Not the first time Buchanan was accused of picking up a young girl

Video from a police body camera has emerged, showing the moment 26-year-old Jonathan Buchanan was pulled over and questioned.

The attack happened in Ponce Inlet Thursday, but Buchanan was stopped in Daytona Beach Shores.

Police say Buchanan grabbed a 16-year-old girl while she was walking to her school bus stop.

They say he touched her buttocks and put his other hand over her mouth to try to force her into his car.

The teen fought back, even biting his hand. Police say Buchanan fled when the teen screamed.

In the police body camera video, police asked Buchanan about a stuffed teddy bear he had on the front seat of his Buick LeSabre.

“Who’s the Valentine's Day teddy bear for?"

“Its mine,” Buchanan responded.

Police said some sort of lotion was on the car floor.

But even more disturbing, police said they discovered something strange about his clothing.

“Is there a reason your pants are unbuttoned right now?" asked the police officer.

“My pants are too tight,” responded Buchanan.

Buchanan made no attempt to buckle up as he’s getting out of the car.

It’s at this moment police drive by with the teen inside a patrol car to identify Buchanan as her attacker.

Police handcuffed and arrested Buchanan.

On Friday, Buchanan went before a Volusia circuit court judge ,where he was officially charged with kidnapping and battery.

His attorney argued the charge should show attempted kidnapping since the girl was never taken.

The judge disagreed. Bond for Buchanan was set at $75,000.

But his lawyer says his family doesn’t have enough money to bond him out, so he may be spending several nights behind bars at the Volusia Count Branch jail.

If he does bond out, he’ll have a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

But this may not be the first time Buchanan allegedly tried to pick up a young girl.

Ormond Beach police say he made lewd comments at a girl in that city, but never attacked her.

Port Orange police say they received complaints from parents who say Buchanan inappropriately touched two children at a swimming pool in 2010.

The 26-year-old was not arrested then.
