A driver lost control of a car, which catapulted into a Palm Bay home Friday.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. at a home in the SE section of the city.

Witnesses say the vehicle was traveling north on Eldron Boulevard SE when it accelerated suddenly in an active school zone, drove off the road and lost control.

The vehicle struck near a culvert, catapulted over a road, cleared a chain link fence and landed in the front yard, rolled twice and struck the home.

“I have seen cars that have gone airborne, that have hit and struck houses before, but never one that cleared a roadway," said Officer Greg Moore with Palm Bay Police. "Not only cleared the roadway, but cleared a chain link fence on the other side of the roadway and then hit a house."

The driver, 75-year-old Joseph Christy, was taken to an area hospital, where he died. The homeowner was uninjured.
