Palm Bay police officers involved with shooting

Palm Bay police officers shot an elderly man who was threatening to harm himself on Wednesday evening, according to officials.

  • 70-year-old man 'brandished' firearm when police entered house
  • The man is being treated for non-life threatening injuries
  • Officers on paid leave; FDLE is investigating

At around 6 p.m., officers entered a house on 103 Americana Blvd. in Palm Bay. When they approached a room where the 70-year-old man was in, he was threatening to harm himself, according to police.

"The subject brandished a firearm, the officers returned fire. The suspect was hit and was taken to Holmes Medical Regional Center," said Police Chief Mark Renkins.

The man was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The officers are on paid leave while Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the case, which is standard for officer-involved shootings.
