Firefighters are continuing to work to make sure a controlled burn in Apopka stays under control.

The burn is off Appy Lane, near Plymouth Sorrento Road.

On Friday, firefighters had to douse smoldering tree debris with water after homeowners in the area complained about smoke from the fire.

For several weeks, contractors have been burning down tons of tree debris from Hurricane Irma near Apopka’s Northwest Recreation Complex.

But on Thursday night, winds blew embers from the burn into areas outside of the controlled burn.

“The burn piles are controlled areas and we feel very confident the contractor was acting accordingly,” said Robert Sargent, Public Information Officer for the City of Apopka.

“This was a high-wind event and was sudden, certainly not to be expected.”

The fire has not threatened nearby homes. Firefighters hope the rain in the area Friday night will help keep the controlled burn contained.
