Thousands of dollars are up for grabs for those in Brevard County impacted by Hurricane Irma as the county is hoping to help pay that gap for homeowners or renters hit hard by the storm.

  • Program is held at Viera Regional Park Community Center
  • Event is held Thursday, Dec. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Post Disaster Recovery Program is aimed at helping those that had some kind of shortfall due to the storm.

Examples include money for rent, mortgage or an insurance deductible.

"We've had quite a few people come in that have roof damage," said Juanita Davis, assistant department director with Brevard County Housing and Human Services. "A new roof could cost up to $15,000 to $20,000 and with your hurricane deductible that’s $5,000. And so, there's still a shortfall that homeowners are experiencing. So that's what I've seen a lot, is us assisting homeowners with filling that hurricane deductible gap."

If someone's apartment was damaged in the hurricane and he or she can no longer live there, the county can also pay for that person's deposit on a new place.

The Brevard County Commissioners approved the use of nearly $180,000 to help residents in Brevard County.

"We still have people living in hotels because there's just not affordable rentals," said Davis.

The program is being held at the Viera Regional Park Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way.

It is being held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday. It is first come, first served.

There are quite a few requirements to receive financial assistance.

For residents needing to know what information they need to bring before going to the assistance program can go to the City of Melbourne's website here.
