A body was found floating in a West Melbourne neighborhood pond Tuesday morning, says West Melbourne Police.

  • Car found submerged; tracks found lead into pond
  • Medical examiner to determine cause of death

Investigators found the body near Soft Breeze Circle in the Whispering Winds community. They then noticed tire tracks in the grass and car parts along the bank.

The car was found submerged by the Brevard Sheriff's dive team near the middle of this community pond.

Tire tracks began on the grass of a vacant lot at the intersection of Peaceful Place and Soft Breeze Circle. They led directly into the pond where the car and body were found.

The question remains — how and when did the driver find his way into the water?

Neighbors said they didn't hear any type of crash and have their theories.

“They didn't realize that wasn't a road, and boom, into the lake,” said Robin Briggs.

“It's not very well lit in the evening, so if he didn't know where he was going, [he] could have just took a wrong turn and ended up in the pond,” said Officer Michelle Page of West Melbourne PD.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death with an autopsy, which could shed more light on what happened.

The man's identity hasn't been released.
