A school community is mourning the loss of Marion County high school senior Jeffery Scott, who was killed in a shooting.

  • Victim and friends got into a fight with 3 men
  • A 17-year-old was beaten but will be OK

Ocala Police say shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, several young men left a basketball game at Vanguard High School to get into a fight.

Police say a 17-year-old was badly beaten and ran away.

Authorities say two of his friends went to his house near Pavilion Oaks in the 2200 Block of NW 1st Avenue looking for him, when three men in a white Mazda drove up and blocked them in with their car.

Police say the men got into another fight — then someone opened fire.

"What used to be a fist fight is now a shootout, and that's something that we're really concerned about, and we just caution young people to recognize the consequences of their actions," said Meghan Shay with Ocala Police.

Police say 18-year-old Scott and Marcus Cooper were shot. Scott, a senior at Vanguard High, died Wednesday morning.

School officials say Cooper is a former Vanguard student and that he and Scott are both well-known.

"The administration tells me they were better known just for their social interaction with other students and administration; they always visible and always outgoing," said Kevin Christian with Marion County Public Schools.

Authorities say the 17-year-old who was beaten will be okay.

No arrests have been made.
