In an effort to stop graffiti, one Brevard County town is taking an artistic approach.

Brightly-painted electrical boxes now decorate the city of Cocoa.

City officials say it is part of an effort to do away with vandalism and the start of a beautification project.

“The city has had a public perception program as it relates to the traffic signals boxes on our main corridors with concert posters and graffiti and us having to remove all that to maintain a positive image for our city,” assistant city manager Matthew Fuhrer said.

The newly-painted boxes are all done by local artists. The city says each box is covered in a graffiti-resilient wrap.

Thirteen painted boxes are located across the city. Officials hopes it starts even more community projects that improve the city for residents and local residents.

“You can find in some areas of the city that many property owners have already completed murals and larger images and art work on their buildings,” Fuhrer said.

In addition, the city did a previous project putting artwork on 20 city benches. Officials hope to expand the box project as well after they evaluate how successful it is.
