Crews in Sanford are working to clean up mud, trash and weeds that grew in planters when they were overrun with floodwater from Hurricane Irma.

Sanford’s Veterans Day ceremonies are on, but crews are racing to get Veterans Park and the rest of the waterfront ready in time.

Flooding in downtown Sanford has forced several groups to make changes to their events – or even cancel them.

The organizer of a run for diabetes said changing the route caused many participants to cancel.

Ernie’s Walk, which benefits abandoned dogs and cats, was scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11. But the walk’s organizers decided to cancel the event altogether.

The water has now gone down, but it left a mess and reports of water moccasins along Sanford’s waterfront.

Richard Abraham is a Navy veteran who likes to sit along the waterfront in front of Sanford’s marina.

“First time I’ve been here that you could drive on the streets, because I came down a week ago, and it was flooded,” said Abraham.

Floodwater from Lake Monroe covered much of the main road along the waterfront for several weeks.

“I’m happy because I can come back down, I’ve been doing this for seven years now,” said Abraham. “I think we’re going to get back to normal now.  Everything goes back to normal eventually.”
