A jury on Tuesday found former security guard Stephen Duxbury guilty of trying to rape and then killing a woman at the Orlando apartment complex where he worked two years ago.

Jurors at the Orange County Courthouse deliberated for just a few hours before returning a verdict of guilty on all counts. He will head to prison for life for killing 27-year-old Sasha Samsudean.

Prosecutors used their closing arguments to convince jurors that Duxbury broke into Samsudean’s apartment and killed her.

The State Attorney’s Office said there were 101 pieces of evidence in the murder trial, all of which showed that the 35-year-old Duxbury broke into Samsudean’s apartment, tried to rape her and then killed her Oct. 17, 2015.

“Defendant gets into her apartment and does these things to her and leaves her covered in bleach, wrapped up in her own comforter, to be discovered only by her friends and police the next day,” State Attorney William Jay said during closing arguments.

Before the judge sentenced Duxbury to life, both of Samsudean’s parents spoke.

“Sasha Samsudean is my daughter, she died a horrible, horrible death,” said Tara Samsudean.

Tara spoke about her family’s last dinner together and the last text messages she sent her daughter.

“Sasha said, ‘I love you,’ and I said, ‘I love you more.’ Sasha said, ‘I love you infinity.’ I said, ‘I love you infinity times infinity to the infinity power,’” said Tara.

“My little Ms. Math, you see she graduated from UF with a math degree.”

Samsudean’s father, Ken Samsudean, addressed the court as well.

He started in tears pointing to his daughter’s picture on the monitor. “That is my baby, that is my baby. That is my baby,” he cried.

After sharing memories of Sasha, Ken also addressed Duxbury’s parents.

“And we do also feel for the parents of the person that took my baby from us. He might have done something wrong. I don’t think they did. I feel for them. My heart goes out to them,” said Ken.

No one spoke on behalf of Duxbury, nor did he want to speak.

Duxbury given two life sentences

Duxbury worked at Uptown Place, Samsudean’s downtown Orlando apartment complex, at the time as a security guard.

Jay showed several security videos during his closing argument that showed Duxbury walking with Samsudean, who was intoxicated the night she died.

Duxbury “followed her for 30 to 40 minutes, since 1:45 in the morning, and he just leaves her there?” Jay asked.

The State Attorney’s Office said Duxbury gave police a different pair of shoes than the ones that he wore the night of Samsudean's killing. They found a pair in his apartment, but the defense argued those were his roommates.

“I could quote a famous saying about shoes, same as gloves. If they don't fit, you must acquit, right? These shoes don't fit,” defense attorney Aaron Delgado said.

Duxbury’s attorneys argued no one knows how someone got into Samsudean’s apartment, and there were no signs of a struggle. Police jumped to conclusions, they said.

In the end, it was enough for jurors to convict Duxbury of first degree murder, attempted sexual battery and burglary. Duxbury had no prior criminal record before his arrest.

Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty. Duxbury does have the option to appeal, and will need to do so within 30 days of the ruling.
