A bear killed a family's small dog in Seminole County on Sunday, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

  • Family wants the bear moved away from neighborhood

The incident happened in The Springs community in Longwood, off State Road 434.

The bear attacked the 12-year-old Yorkie named Harley and then left the area, FWC said.

The dog’s owners said they want the bear moved away from the neighborhood.

“You know, this bear has been in The Springs and it’s been an issue,” Joanie Callahan said. “It killed a dog two weeks prior and we do all the right things. We watch before we go out, we have the horns.”

The Callahans are urging their neighbors to secure their trash cans and to stop feeding the bears so they don’t stick around.

FWC officers and a biologist will be in the neighborhood this week.
