A Volusia County man has bonded out of jail after police said he intentionally threw a firecracker at his neighbor’s dog, severely injuring it.

  • Madison Carroll out on bond after allegedly throwing firecracker at dog
  • Dog now in a Maitland animal hospital
  • Police said Carroll smelled of alcohol durin arrest

The dog is now in an animal hospital in Maitland.

His owner rushed him to the hospital where he is recovering after he was severely hurt in his neighbor's yard, but luckily the family said the dog is being tough and that the vets will be able to save his leg.

Seeing his family dog Oscar covered in blood broke Kyle Jasinski's heart.

"I was about two houses down when I heard the bang. I ran up to him crying and then I see his foot, and I just lost it. It was so horrifying," said Jasinski.

He thought he'd heard a gunshot, then he said he found Oscar whimpering in his neighbor's driveway across the street.

"I thought I was going to lose him. I was so horrified, it was so disgusting. I was covered in blood in five seconds as soon as I picked him up,” Jasinski said.

South Daytona police said that was the sound of his neighbor Madison Carroll throwing an M-80 firecracker to scare off the dogs in his yard.

But he ended up blowing off part of Oscar’s paw and damaging his ear.

"I couldn’t think of anybody who would do such a thing gross thing. He could’ve thrown it in the air, he could’ve thrown it away from him. He got him in the leg, he deliberately threw it at him," Jasinski said.

Police said 58-year old Carroll smelled of alcohol during his arrest.

His family says the victim's dogs had been after their cats for the past week, also attacking them.

But when Carroll posted $2,500 bond and got home from jail Tuesday, he drove into the garage and dodged reporters. His mother said he didn't want to talk.

She said he loves animals.

"I don’t think he meant to harm the dog, just meant to scare it because it did attack … I’m just so sorry, and I don’t know what to say to the lady,” said Shirley Carroll, the suspect’s mother. “Like I said, my son wouldn’t normally hurt anybody, but I just feel upset, nervous."

Jasinski admitted the dachshund always gets out, but he said his family's dog didn't deserve this.

"He had no remorse, he was just sitting there,” Jasinski said. “Justice needs to be served."

One neighbor said he has been bitten by one of the dogs before and that people complain about them.

There was a 911 call from the suspect's home right before the incident, but that was the only complaint police had about the dogs the day the incident happened.

The police chief said there is no other record of complaints or calls to the victim's home regarding the dogs.
