A South Daytona man has been charged with animal cruelty after police say he threw a firecracker at a dog that ran into his yard, which blew off its paw.

  • Police say dachshund's paw was blown off from firecracker
  • Dachshund's leg will have to be amputated, police say

Madison Carroll is facing an aggravated animal cruelty charge and had a bond of $2,500, but has since posted bond, according to an affidavit by South Daytona Police.

At about 1:44 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the 900 block of Pineapple Road after receiving a call about a hurt dog.

Carroll, 58, told police that his neighbor's two dogs were running loose around his yard, and one of them tried to bite his 34-year-old niece when she tried to pet it, according to the affidavit.

Carroll went into his home and walked back out with an M80 firecracker, lit it and threw it at the dachshund, where it landed next to the dog and exploded, the police report said.

The dog lost its paw, it ran back to its home, leaving a trail of blood behind.

Carroll had a "smell (of) a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath" and that his speech "was also slurred and mumbled," the affidavit said.

The niece told police that her uncle is "usually intoxicated" and that she was not scared of the dog.

The owner took the dog to an animal hospital, but the right leg will have to be amputated. Authorities also said the firecracker of that size could have killed the dog if it had been in dachshund's mouth.

There have been no reports of complaints about the neighbor's dogs getting loose, police said.
