Central Florida is honoring veterans on this Veterans Day weekend as the local nonprofit Camaraderie Foundation is planting American flags in the lawn in front of the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center in Sanford on Friday.

It is a way to raise awareness of the invisible wounds of war, especially for those just returning from warzones.

The Veterans Administration says half of returning veterans do not seek treatment for their mental health condition, such as those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

“PTSD is (something) that is breaking down families. One in four of our post 9/11 veterans commit suicide every day. And there’s other effects like homelessness and military trauma that affects the veterans every day,” said Ruben Gonzalez with the Camaraderie Foundation.

The Camaraderie Foundation provides free counseling for veterans, service members and their families.

The foundation is planting 13,000 American flags to represent the estimated 13,000 post-9/11 veterans in Central Florida who are going untreated for those invisible wounds of war.

The Camaraderie Foundation is also planting flags at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando and MacDill Park in Tampa.
