Our 15th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season has developed well out in the north Atlantic on this Monday.
- Tropical Storm Ophelia forms in the Atlantic
- No threat to Florida or U.S.
- May become hurricane by end of the week
Tropical Storm Ophelia is located about 785 miles west-southwest of the Azores Islands, with winds sustained at 50 mph and higher gusts.
It’s currently moving to the northeast at 7 mph, but is expected to meander to the east, then southeast, then back to the northeast the next several days. Even though water temps are a little cooler in this area of the Atlantic, some strengthening is possible and Ophelia may become a hurricane by the end of this week.
It will NOT be a threat to the U.S. at any point in its lifecycle.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, no tropical formation is expected in the next five days.
