Some Seminole County students are the first in the state to go through a learning program that focuses on computer programming.

The national computer science program Code to the Future chose Altamonte Springs Elementary and Pine Crest Elementary in Sanford as the first two schools in Florida to take on the curriculum that teaches coding – the language that makes much of what we do on the internet work.

Since the program began at the beginning of the school year, 5th grader James Foxworth has already designed his own video game.

“I got so excited and pumped up to do coding because I’ve never known how to do it – I was like yes – we’re going to do coding,” said Foxworth.

The program is part of the Seminole County School district’s goal to incorporate the computer science curriculum into every students learning by the year 2020.  Students at the two schools are doing things they never thought possible.

“I didn’t think I could design a video game, so it’s pretty cool,” said Mia DeVivo.

The students are already realizing how they could use what they’re learning to make money someday.

“When I grow up I want to be a coder and make my own games,” said Foxworth.
