Gov. Rick Scott was in Flagler County on Friday to announce that Brevard, Flagler and Volusia are among four counties that will share $15 million he is allocating through an emergency executive order for beach restoration and protection.

  • 4 counties to share $15 million following Hurricane Matthew
  • Brevard, Flagler and Volusia will get portion of money, Scott said
  • Scott was at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park on Friday

Scott said money from the state's Division of Emergency Management will fund restoration projects in Volusia, Flagler, Brevard and St. Johns counties.

The governor's announcement came at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, which was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew last October. The ocean breached a large section of the park.

"It's to make sure that we keep these beaches up," Scott told county officials Friday. "It's going to be adding beach, adding sand. It's also to be doing reconstruction and rebuilding sand dunes. But, it's to protect our buildings (and) protect our roads. And of course, we want our tourists to get back here."

Flagler County is already getting about $30 million from the federal government to restore beaches damaged by the storm.
