The 26-year-old Fort Lauderdale airport shooting suspect has been ordered to be held without bond on Tuesday.

  • FBI agent: Gun used in Jan. 6 attack is the same that police took from Esteban Santiago last year
  • If convicted of the charges against him, Santiago could get the death penalty

Esteban Santiago, who authorities say fatally shot five people and injured six others at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 6, was ordered to be held without bond during a Tuesday hearing.

An FBI agent told the court at the hearing, which was held in Fort Lauderdale, that Santiago allegedly used a 9 mm gun in the Jan. 6 attack and it was the same weapon that police in Alaska seized and later returned to Santiago a year ago.

After the shooting, Santiago allegedly said that he was being mind controlled by the government and that he was inspired by ISIS-related chatrooms and websites, the agent testified.

Santiago's arraignment hearing is Jan. 30.

If convicted of federal airport violence and firearms charges that resulted in death, Santiago could get the death penalty.

Santiago has not entered a plea.
