A Deland High School ninth grader will be spending some time at a Juvenile Detention Center after he was arrested for allegedly having a gun in his backpack.

  • Teacher overheard students talking about contents of backpack
  • School officials found loaded Glock handgun in the backpack
  • Teen never brandished weapon or threatened anyone

Volusia County deputies say a teacher overheard the 15-year-old tell another student he had a $1,000 in cash inside his backpack, and something that might get him arrested.

The teen was taken to an administrator's office, where school officials say they found a Glock 19 handgun with a loaded magazine in it, as well as an extra loaded magazine.

Administrators say the teen told them he took the gun and cash from his grandfather and was planning to give the gun to an adult friend.

School officials say the boy never brandished the gun or threaten anyone at school.

The teen's grandfather did not wish to press charges for taking the gun, but the boy will face chages for bringing a weapon to school.
