Disney is giving us an inside look at how its specialty coffee gets from field to theme park.

If you've ever enjoyed a 'cup of joe' at Walt Disney World Resort, chances are, it's from Tampa-based Joffrey's Coffee & Tea Company. Back in '84, the startup claimed to be the first specialty coffee roaster in Florida to have its own coffee shop.

"One of the executives went into our location in Hyde Park and thought it was the best coffee he's ever had," said Ted Abrams, Joffrey's President and CEO. "Disney agreed to do a trial and that trial has morphed into what we do today."

What they do, meaning operating 19 Joffrey's locations at Disney, from Animal Kingdom and Epcot to Hollywood Studios. It's also the in-room selection at Disney hotels and on Disney Cruise Lines.

So we wanted to know how the bean gets from international fields to Lake Buena Vista.

Abrams say they use one truck.

"We import coffee from all over the world, from 18 growing regions," Abrams said."It comes into multiple ports - New Orleans, it comes from New York, Miami, Jacksonville and we bring it into our facility in Tampa ... Our orders get called in by our cast members here on property on a Monday and it's roasted and delivered on a Thursday or Friday."

He says cast members know not to over-order.

"You wouldn't take your tomatoes that you buy from the grocery and stick them out in the heat," he said. "Coffee's no different. Coffee's a fruit."

A fruit? Yep.

The bean-resembling seed is inside the red or purple fruit, often referred to as a cherry.

Abrams says the company is best known for their custom blend - done by 2 roastmasters.

Here's another secret. The pastries sold at Joffrey's come from 3 other local businesses - Donut King, Backhouse Orlando, and Bagel King.

"Joffrey's" is named after a premier ballet company back in 1984. Abrams says the founders of the company wanted to name themselves after something representing - quote - "the best of the best."

"It's hard to put into words," Abrams smiled. "We're just very, very fortunate to be able to be here."
