The sight of running water was good news to Bunnell residents after the city's water system suddenly stopped working Monday.

  • Bunnell experienced failure in city water system Monday
  • Water system in place for less than a year
  • City has tapped into Palm Coast water for now

The city's running water is temporarily coming from Palm Coast while a precautionary boil water notice is in effect.

“I went into the bathroom and I wanted to see if there was water in there, and there was no water," Bunnell resident Danielle Wood said. "I wanted to wash the baby's sippy cup and that was it — there was no water, period.”

The city said at about 5 a.m., the electrical system that powers the water pumps and serves almost 3,000 residents shut down.

Wood said her water was down until about 10 a.m.

“It took awhile for me, because the water wasn't on, so it was hard for me. I just jumped in the shower,” said Wood about getting ready for work.

The city said its new water system has been in place for less than a year, so every city water employee was on deck to figure out the problem.

“On a daily basis, this is where water is coming from. We automatically have the historic water tower as a backup system,” employee Dan Davis said.

The backup water tower only lasted about two hours. But the city was able to turn on the emergency water supply from Palm Coast.

The cities of Bunnell and Palm Coast signed the agreement six years ago. This is the first time Bunnell has had to hook up to Palm Coast's water. The agreement states that if either party needs water in an emergency, each would help each other out. But the cities have to charge the lowest possible rate.

“Because we connected with Palm Coast water right away, there's a lot of pressure. There's a lot of water coming into our system," Davis said.

“I've never had any experience with this before at all. We've had things where we've had to boil water but only for like an hour. So this is crazy,” Wood said.

The precautionary boil water notice is in effect until further notice.
