  • Species of pig native to Philippines is critically endangered

A Visayan warty pig, a species that is critically endangered, gave birth to the two piglets Saturday. Their sexes are not yet known.

The mother, 14-year-old Fancy, was born at San Diego Zoo but has spent most of her life at the Brevard Zoo. In 2008, she gave birth to three piglets. She shares the Brevard exhibit with two other adult pigs: female Makinna and male Pandan, which is the new piglets' father.

The Australasia section at the zoo will be closed until next year for renovations, so guests will not be able to view the piglets in person for several months.

Visayan warty pigs are native to the Philippines, where they are threatened by habitat loss, hunting and conflicts with farmers. They are classified critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
