Hundreds of residents in one Seminole County apartment complex say they had to go more than 12 hours without being able to cook or use hot water Tuesday. The gas outage is being blamed on a construction accident.

  • Gas line cut during construction
  • Some residents went more than 12 hours without gas

Residents at the Seminole Garden Apartments in Sanford say their gas went out about seven Tuesday morning. They say they were told by property managers a gas line was cut during construction work early Tuesday morning.

At one point Tuesday evening the Sanford Fire Department responded to what one firefighter said was the smell of gas at the complex.

One mother says her family hasn't been able to cook, clean or take hot showers all day.

"I just had to give my three and four-year-old a bath in cold water, which is unfair,” said Lekisha Barber, a resident. “I feel like even though we are in public housing, we do have rights."

About eight o’clock Tuesday night, we spotted a maintenance crew working to some of the residents’ gas back on. At that time, some residents said they had gas service again, but others said they still didn’t.

We tried reaching out to management at Seminole Garden Apartments Tuesday night, but we did not immediately hear back.
