Joseph Robinson, a former officer with the Orlando Police Department, now runs a security consulting company called Fitzgerald Technology Group. The company helps local businesses protect themselves against tragedies.

Robinson is part of this year's international security convention by ASIS International in Orlando. Event organizers want to help communities become safer and more resilient.

The event comes three months after the Pulse nightclub shooting.

"Your mind's eye could not even fathom any situation like the Pulse (situation)," Robinson said Monday.

Kevin Doss, who wrote the book "Active Shooter: Preparing For & Responding To A Growing Threat," said businesses should have a plan and training in place to prevent massacres like Pulse.

"Do I think it could be prevented? No," Doss said. "But I think it could have been mitigated. Things such as having medical supplies (and) getting law enforcement in faster are all things that would reduce the death and casualty rates."

There are more than 20,000 people participating in the ASIS security convention this year — a number that has grown because of a larger concern for safety.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson addressed the public on Monday and talked about terrorist-inspired attacks becoming more common.

"Public vigilance (and) public awareness can and has made a difference," Johnson said.

Robinson said he will continue helping businesses gear up and guard against future attacks, but he hopes conventions will help set the tone.

"To really have the courage to see something and say something knowing that you may be subject to ridicule for doing it," Robinson said. "It's still the right thing to do."

There are a number of educational sessions about the aftermath of the Pulse attack. The convention runs until Thursday. For more information, go here.
