Orange County students are counting down the last official weekend of summer.

  • OCPS students start school Monday
  • Law enforcement will check for speedsters
  • School district implementing new measures

As everyone enjoys that last bit of freedom, schools in the district are gearing up for the new year by making sure new safety measures are in place before the first day of school.

“We are partnering with local law enforcement to ensure schools are safe,” Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins said.

More law enforcement officers will work with the schools this year. On Monday, officers will pay particular attention to speeders.

“We will be out in numbers come Monday, doing speed enforcement in our school zones,” said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.

The sheriff wanted to remind everyone that speeding could cost you big time. Speeding through School Zones could cost up to $1,104.

School district employees are also revving up their on-campus safety regulations.

Officials wouldn’t go into too many details on those plans, but they did say some more schools will start using security wands at random.

Also new this year, faculty and staff went through extensive training with law enforcement on how to react in emergency situations.

“Our goal is to keep our schools safe and treat our students appropriately if we do use force,” Sheriff Demings explained.
