Happy Birthday, Mars Rover Curiosity.

  • Mars Rover Curiosity landed on Mars 4 years ago Friday
  • Curiosity's mission was only 2 years long. It's now indefinite.
  • Curiosity sang "Happy Birthday" to itself

The rover landed on Mars August 5, 2012. Its mission was supposed to last about 687 days, but the rover keeps rolling on the Red Planet to this day.

To celebrate, Curiosity sang itself "Happy Birthday to You."

Florence Tan with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center says the song is created by programming frequencies that are transmitted to the rover on Mars. NASA first did this in 2013, and it was the first time a song was played on another planet.

Curiosity may have been alone for the song, but it is not alone on Mars.

Mars Rover Opportunity, which landed in 2004, is also still traveling the Red Planet. However, the two rovers are nowhere near each other.
