Area residents got to show their appreciation for law enforcement in a unique way in Palm Bay on Saturday, taking part in "Space Coast Law Enforcement Day."

  • Security professionals, Palm Bay Police partnered for event
  • Event provided learning opportunities for gun safety

The Space Coast chapter of ASIS, an international association of security professionals, partnered with Melbourne gun and tactical gear dealer Blackside Tactical and the Palm Bay Police Department to put on the event at the Palm Bay Police gun range.

“Appreciation for what our law enforcement does every day, in putting themselves at risk," said Arabia Greer, Vice Chair of the ASIS Space Coast Chapter, describing the primary goal of the day.

“I think the biggest thing is for the complete novice to come to an event like this is to lose that fear of guns and feel a little more positive about themselves in handling a firearm," said Greer. "Those that are experienced in firearms came here to have a good time."

Attendees came away with a number of different lessons learned and experiences taken to heart.

“Today I shot the handgun for the first time," said attendee Sophia Case, who is only eight years old. “I learned that if you just listen, nothing bad will happen to you."

“I appreciate them risking their lives every day, making us safe, keeping us safe," said resident Christopher Johnsten

Meanwhile, the local ASIS Space Coast chapter wants law enforcement to know they’re appreciated.

“We will spend every dime that we get from this on honoring our officers," said Greer.

The event was also a learning experience for those interested in carrying a concealed weapon, and for others interested in basic gun safety.

“Make sure that nobody gets hurt or the handgun doesn’t fall out of your hands and how to hold it right and how to grip it, how to shoot it right and load it," said Sophia.

The ASIS Space Coast Chapter is planning to honor local law enforcement again in May 2017.
