Tropical Storm Earl is now Hurricane Earl ahead of its push to Central America, where it's making landfall.

  • Earl is 5th named storm of 2016 Atlantic hurricane season
  • Storm is well south of the United States
  • Florida won't see any major effects from system

As of the 11 p.m. update, Earl was packing 75 mph winds, with higher gusts. Nothing else has changed. Hurricane warnings are still in effect for Belize and this storm will be hundreds and hundreds of miles away from Florida.

Earl is expected to move quickly into Mexico and weaken.

Earl is centered about 40 miles east of Belize City, Belize. The storm system is moving west at 15 mph.

Moisture being pulled up across the Caribbean from Earl will help bring rain chances up for us, but no direct impact is expected from this storm. Right now, none of the other tropical waves in the Atlantic basin are expected to develop over the next five days.
