A sperm whale beached itself in Ponce Inlet on Saturday, according to Volusia County Beach Safety personnel.

Officials said the sperm whale beached itself in Ponce Inlet around 1 p.m. Volusia's Marine Mammal Stranding Team, along with personnel from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute deployed to the scene in an effort to help the whale.

Unfortunately, the whale did not survive. County officials said the whale will be transported off the beach so that a necropsy can be performed.
