The University of Central Florida is delaying the opening of its downtown Orlando campus by one year, the school announced Thursday.

  • UCF Downtown delayed to August 2019
  • Officials wanted to avoid opening in the middle of academic year
  • UCF Downtown will have about 7,700 students

The downtown campus will now open August 2019 instead the original start date of August 2018.

The decision was made in order to prevent students from having to relocate in the middle of an academic year, officials said in a statement.

“UCF Downtown is one of the largest projects in our history, and we want to ensure that our plans reflect the scope and impact it will have on Orlando,” said Thad Seymour, Jr., vice provost for UCF Downtown. “With complex and transformative projects like this, we need to make sure we get it right.”

Once open, UCF Downtown will have about 7,700 students from UCF and Valencia.

The campus will have programs like communication, digital media, public service and health-related technology.
